Quake II: Heavy Metal (Q2HM) is THE sound effects and music mod for Quake II. Completely remakes almost all sound effects of Quake II, giving them power and authority on the dystopian techno battlefields of the game. Everything now sounds like war - as opposed to the original's falling peas, soap bubbles and chew-toys. The mod is packed with the alternate soundtrack as well, which is none other than a classic-style traditional heavy metal. \m/ Even though there are a few atmospheric tracks as well. Yes, mission packs are supported. They have their own, different music set. I have EQ'd and refined all tracks as much as i could, cause the original recordings are quite shitty. But, i think i've face-lifted them nicely...

Q2HM Mod REQUIRES 3.24 patch, - or an equivalent sourceport. That is because original Quake II SFX are mono, while most of Q2HM SFX - are stereo-designed and mixed. To support these, you need a renderer that can work with stereo sound FX. If you use an unsupported version/engine/sourceport - you will keep getting error messages, while hearing no sound at all.  3.24 patch can be downloaded here, at Oldschool HQ.

COMPATIBILITY: Q2HM has been confirmed to work with Quake II 3.24 patch, Ultimate Quake II patch and KM Quake II.  Q2HM WILL NOT WORK with retail Quake II (including 3.20 patch), Quake2MAX, UQE, ArQ2Lite, Q2XP - or any other engine that does not support stereo sound.

To use the mod - extract the archive, rename the Q2HM.PAK to pak9.pak - and put it into your BASEQ2 directory, which is inside the Quake II folder. That's it! You're set, - play the game! The mod is compatible with the mission packs as well, - just don't forget to copy-paste the same file into BASEQ2\ROGUE and into BASEQ2\XATRIX, for each mission pack respectively.

If for some reason you already have a pak9.pak in your BASEQ2 directory - then use any higher number between 9 and 99. The main game file is pak0.pak - any other files you might have are mods. Make sure Q2HM is renamed to the higher number than the existing *.PAK files in BASEQ2 directory.

To use the new music: very simple. After extracting the Q2HM mod, - place a folder called "music" into your BASEQ2 directory. The rest  is already set up. Again - this will only work with sourceports that support OGG tracks playback. Quake II uses tracks 2-11, mission packs use 12-21. Directory structure should look like this: "Baseq2\Music". Enjoy the Heavy Metal experience!
